MOLINE, Ill. -- 10/08/2024 -- The City of Moline and Metronet proudly announce the completion of the main construction of a 100% fiber optic network, making Moline a Gigabit City. This achievement brings the fastest internet service provider in the country* to the city's home and businesses, empowering residents and driving economic growth.
This transformative partnership began in December 2022, with construction commencing in February 2023. Over the past year and a half, Metronet has invested more than $19 million in the project, burying 125 miles of fiber and adding 60 more miles to the city's telephone poles.
"Today marks a significant milestone for Moline," said Mayor Rayapati. "Our partnership with Metronet has not only enhanced the quality of life for our residents but has also positioned Moline as a leader in technological innovation. Access to high-speed internet is essential for both families and businesses, and we're thrilled to see this project come to fruition."
The completion of the fiber optic network means that Moline residents can now access high-speed internet with speeds up to 5 Gbps, allowing for seamless streaming, remote work, online education, and much more. Businesses can subscribe to service with speeds up to 10 Gbps or even higher.
